More than half of Americans experience “filing fear” every tax season, according to new research. A survey of 2,004 taxpayers found that 54% feel anxious about tax season—whether it’s the stress of starting their taxes or worrying about making mistakes.
Do Zodiac Signs Affect Tax Anxiety?
The study explored whether tax-filing habits align with Zodiac signs. It turns out some signs feel the pressure more than others:
Tauruses are the most anxious, with 19% reporting “a lot” of yearly tax stress.
Aquariuses and Aries are the least anxious, with only 10% feeling significant stress.
Scorpios are the most likely to procrastinate (58%).
Virgos would rather be doing anything else (23%).
Tauruses are the most likely to forget to file altogether (25%).
Late Filers vs. Early Birds
The study also revealed key differences in how different signs approach tax deadlines:
Aries are the most likely to wait until April (19%)—but they’re also the best at sticking to their filing plan (71%).
Scorpios (19%) are the most likely to have filled something out incorrectly.
Libras (15%) admit to purposely waiting until the last day.
Cancers (62%) file early just to get it over with.
Leos (46%) file early to get their refund as soon as possible.
Capricorns (23%) are the most likely to file earlier than planned.
Geminis (24%) and Aquariuses (25%) file early to plan spring and summer vacations.
Breaking the Cycle of Tax Procrastination
The survey found that 51% of respondents agree that waiting to file increases stress. However, 55% of habitual late filers plan to break the cycle in 2025 and file on time.
Still, awareness about tax season timelines remains low—only 28% of Americans knew that the IRS starts accepting returns at the end of January.
Expert Advice on Stress-Free Filing
“Tax season can be daunting, and the longer you wait, the more stressful it becomes,” said Janelle Sallenave, Chief Spending Officer at Chime. “Getting a head start gives you peace of mind and allows time to catch mistakes. Some services even offer free state and federal filing, so it’s important to do your research.”
Despite the stress, many people feel relief after filing:
Geminis (60%) feel relieved.
Capricorns (43%) feel satisfied.
Libras (10%) feel exhausted.
Additionally, 26% of Americans say filing their taxes makes them feel more financially secure, and 24% feel their financial situation improves afterward.
